How to Play Number Boxes
The rules are remarkably simple to learn in sixty seconds, yet they unlock deep mathematical depth and strategic elegance.
Rectangles Only
Every shape drawn on the board must be a clean geometric rectangle or square. Shapes with bends, L-shapes, T-shapes, or diagonal steps are strictly invalid. Every line must follow the orthogonal grid lines of the board.
Area Matches Value
The total number of grid cells covered by a box must exactly equal the number shown in its clue. A clue of 4 can form a 1×4 line, a 4×1 column, or a 2×2 square. A clue of 12 can form 1×12, 2×6, 3×4, 4×3, 6×2, or 12×1.
One Clue Per Box
Each rectangle must contain exactly one numbered clue inside its boundaries. A rectangle cannot contain two clues, nor can it contain zero clues. The single clue serves as the nucleus and anchor of that specific territory.
No Overlaps Allowed
Rectangles cannot overlap one another. Every cell on the grid belongs strictly to one territory. If two candidate boxes attempt to claim the same cell, at least one of them must be reconsidered using logical deduction.
Complete 100% Coverage
To achieve victory, the entire grid must be fully covered by committed boxes. There cannot be any empty or unassigned cells left when the puzzle is solved. Every square millimeter of the board is part of a territory.

1. Prime Factor Decomposition
Prime numbered clues (such as 2, 3, 5, 7) are your greatest friends. Because they have no divisors other than 1 and themselves, a clue of 5 can only ever be a 1×5 strip or a 5×1 strip. If the grid boundary or neighboring numbers block one orientation, the other orientation is guaranteed true!
2. Corner & Boundary Trapping
Examine cells located in the far corners of the grid. If a corner cell is only within reach of a single nearby clue, that clue must expand to swallow the corner. This frequently resolves 30% to 50% of the entire board in the first sixty seconds.
3. Island Isolation Elimination
When you see empty cells cut off from other clues by existing rectangular borders, ask yourself: which remaining clue has the reach to cover these cells? An isolated cluster of 3 cells must belong to a clue capable of spanning that sector.
4. Competing Territory Shadows
If placing a candidate box for Clue A leaves Clue B with zero valid orientations, then your candidate placement for Clue A is logically impossible. Using shadow projection, you can eliminate invalid moves with absolute certainty.
